Hank "Thunderstick" Deberitz.
press release from Norm Du Guerre below...
Born in Oslo, Norway 1965. Hank came to the blues early by way of a 'High' School Teacher with vision and unusual teaching methods, playing John Lee Hooker as a soundtrack to his English class. Shortly thereafter a close mate handed him a bass guitar and by that stage of the game the damage was already done. The horse long gone and bolted...for better or worse, Hank was on his way...
Since those early heady days at high school and Oslo garage bands. Hank has found himself as a part of several seminal Aussie blues bands since arriving on these shores in1988.
Hank has always been a big supporter of his local blues scene in Perth. forever out gigging. These days Hank is laying down the low down for The LowDown on both upright and electric bass...
On the multiple decades journey towards The LowDown. Hank has been a member of important WA blues bands such as Nacho Mamaz (incidentally, it was as members of this band where Hank and "The Sheik" met for the first time, remaining close mates ever since) Hank's own band The Vibrolators are turning 30 this year.
Hank has also remained a session player for hire and has toured locally, nationally and internationally as a band member with the following acts...Perth Blues Club Houseband, Open Mike Blues Houseband, Marlon B Rando, Rick Steele's Hot Biscuit Band, Reg Zar's HiLife, Bayou Brothers, Diamond Dave and the DooDaddies, Steve Tallis' Holy Ghost and Sankes of Desire, Rupert Guenther Blues Band and Kniki.
in addition to this Hank has done and continues to do "fill in's and cameos with touring bands and solo artists like...Lightnin'Jack (WA) Ivan Zar (WA) Matt Taylor (WA) Lil'Fi (QLD) Chris Wilson (VIC) Louis King and The Liars Club (VIC) Dutch Tilders (VIC) Benny Peters (VIC) Rob Riley (VIC) Kaz Dalla Rosa (VIC)
Being a complete blues tragic and a "lifer" at that Hank has and continues to back numerous international blues luminaries like Mud Morganfield, Lynwood Slim, Alex Schultz, Kirk Fletcher, Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges, Bob Margolin, Jimmy Thackery, Barbara Blue, Molten Mike (all artists to this point ex USA) JW Jones (CAN) Sue Foley (CAN)Marc Tee (BELGIUM) Steve "West" Weston (UK) Big Joe Louis (UK) Martin Harley (UK).
In addition to most major festivals in Australia, Hank has also appeared at large festivals in Asia and Europe. Now in his 61st year on this wonderful Planet Earth, it's time for Hank to...well...hmmm...being the Bassman we ban't put it any other way than...get Low Down with Blues yet again!!
Hank will be appearing at all LowDown shows from 2025 and on as an official band member replacing Andrew "Ripper" Armitage on electric bass.
Hank has also threatened to bring in the Big Doghouse Bass, otherwise known as the Upright or Double Bass as heavily featured in the authentic sounds of traditional Chicago and Texas blues.
